Playlist for Classical Discoveries Special Programs - Sacred Bridges
Since the Christian and Jewish Holidays are often celebrated close to each other I was faced with the dilemma as to which holiday I should give my attention.
The concept of the program celebrating the spiritual music of many religions was born some years ago.
Sacred Bridges is a special program that often airs during the time of important Jewish and Christian holidays but it's focus is on music from multiple religious traditions rather than just two, exploring the elements that make music an international language, becoming a Sacred Bridge between different faiths.
This program is not about what each religion represents and its differences, but rather focused on similarities as for example, the use of various modal scales between medieval music and music from South India, Sufi devotional chants, Italian Laudas, and examples of settings of Psalms that you can find in many major religions.
Written by composers from many religious backgrounds, inspired by various religious and spiritual beliefs and speaking about the same things - devotion, hope, love, sadness and suffering.
The concept of Sacred Bridges was rather accidental. No question that the Cd titled “Sacred Bridges” with the Kings Singers and Sarband was an inspiration, as well as my favorite monarch in medieval history – the 13th century King Alfonso the X called by Muslims El Sabio (the Wise), who compiled over 400 and composed some of the Cantigas De Santa Maria - devotional songs to honor the Mother of Jesus.
He supported science, astronomy, the arts and expanded the code of laws. Despite his own deep religious feelings towards Christianity, he employed in his court Jews, Muslims and Christians who worked on scientific and other projects. It has been said that his orchestra consisted of representatives of all 3 religious groups and that his reign was one of the most peaceful and prosperous, where all religious groups enjoyed equal protection from prosecution that swept Europe later.
After centuries of religious wars, which divided and destroyed nations and caused persecution of whole groups of the people, we should look with admiration at the 13th century king El Sabio, who knew how to bring people together. |
