Marvin Rosen, host and producer of Classical Discoveries and Classical Discoveries Goes Avant-Garde and WPRB are paying tribute to this great American composer just days before the beginning of his Centennial Year.

Marvin, producer of this Marathon is one of the best qualified hosts to conduct this live 24 hour birthday celebration.
A pianist and teacher, he wrote his doctoral dissertation on Hovhaness’s music. Marvin was a friend of the composer for many years and spent 2 weeks in Seattle working with him on his piano works in preparation for the first of two recordings on the Koch International Classics label. Marvin also wrote the liner notes for other Hovhaness recordings on the Koch International Classics label as well.

In 2011 Marvin is planning to present various piano recitals of his music.  In addition, he is organizing at Westminster Choir College of Rider University a whole Hovhaness concert with faculty members of Westminster Conservatory.

An avid recorded music collector, Marvin has one of the most extensive rare collections of Hovhaness’s music, both on CD and LP.

In the last thirteen and a half years as a radio host, Marvin has presented more of Hovhaness’s music than probably any other single radio program. Each year he pays a special birthday tribute.

This entire 24 Hour Marathon will be devoted only to music of Alan Hovhaness and will include a large variety of music by this incredible 20th century genius.

Two guests during the marathon will be clarinetist and conductor Lawrence Sobol (December 26, evening}, and pianist Sahan Arzruni (December 27, early afternoon) both of whom have recorded the composer’s music.

The Marathon will include, for example, Symphonies Symphonies 3, 4, 34 and 40, Concerto For Violin and Strings, "Talin", Concerto No. 2 for Violin and String Orchestra, Seven Greek Folk Dances for Harmonica and Piano, Magnificat, Piano Sonata, "Ananda", Shambala for Violin, Sitar and Orchestra, Khaldis: Concerto for Piano 4 Trumpets and Percussion, Concerto No. 3, Diran (the Religious Singer) for Horn and Strings, plus much, much more!!!!!
