Wednesday,
February 02, 2005 - 6:40 to 11:00 The airing of exciting new classical music is one of the main features of "Classical Discoveries". Today's program gave listeners much to cheer about when the American radio premiere of Harmony of the Spheres by the gifted Dutch composer Joep Franssens was presented in its entirety. I actually purchased the CD of this work after reading about it but not hearing a note. When I received the recording from England (Presto Classical), I put the CD right on, and realized from the compositions opening minutes that I had made an important musical discovery that I thought would make a major impact on my program. It turned out that my sixth sense was correct. After the 1 hour plus work was completed the phone began to ring and ring, and ring! This was the first time in my almost 8 years of doing this program that 2 lines rang at once. The e-mails continue to come in. Is this a major work of our time? You bet it is! It was completed in 2002 and is scored for choir and (in the third movement) chamber orchestra. What a loss to all those who refuse to give New Classical Music a chance!! In all my years on the radio, I have recieved many, many positive reactions about new works, but never like the reaction I received from "Harmony of the Spheres". Bravo to Joep Franssens! Also bravo to the Netherlands Chamber Choir and to the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and conductor Tonu Kaljuste! I will be airing more works by Joep Franssens on upcoming programs. Do watch my home page for announcements about these. 6:00 - 7:00 Heino Eller - Five Pieces for String Orchestra - Scottish National Orchestra, Neeme Jarvi, Conductor - Chandos - CHAN 8525 - Anon. 13th Century Spain - "Macar e door" - The Dufay Collective - Harmonia mundi -HMU 907390 - Peter Schickele - Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra - Robert Spring, Clarinet, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, Timothy Russell, Conductor - Summit Records - DCD 1023 - Pierre Attaingnant - Pavane 18 - Convivium Musicum, Sven Berger, Conductor - Musica Rediviva - MRCD 001 - Johann Kaspar Kerll - "Missa Nigra" - Orpheus Choir Munich, New Munich Court Orchestra, Gerd Guflhor, Conductor - Oehms Classics -OC 358 7:00 - 8:00 Marilyn J. February 09, 2005 - 5:50 to 8:30 AM When one thinks of American Symphonists certain composers come right to mind including Aaron Copland, Leonrard Bernstein, Roy Harris, William Schuman, Peter Menin and Vincent Persichett, to name several. Very rarely, if ever, do we think of Paul Creston as a major American Symphonist. Creston lived from 1906 until 1985 and actually wrote Six Symphonies. On today's edition of "Classical Discoveries" the Symphony No. 4 of Paul Creston was featured. The work was just released in its world premiere recording on the Albany Records label and illustrates Creston's ability to write in the symphonic form. The Symphony Number 4, Op. 52, composed in 1951, is a very effective work in 4 movements and proves that Creston was indeed a very talented composer who deserves to be considered one of the premiere American Symphonists of the 20th Century. 5:50am - 7:00 Francis Correa de Arauxo - "Segundo Tiento" - Montserrat Torrent, Organ - La ma de guido - LMG2018 - Craig Bohmer - Six Pieces after Shakespeare - The Oakwood Chamber Players - Oakwood Chamber Players, Inc. - No number given Edmund Rubbra - Sonatina for Treble Recorder and Harpsichord, Op. 128 - Ian Wilson, Recorder, Laurence Cummings, Harpsichord - Dutton Laboratories - CDLX 7142 - Cyril Scott - Carillon - Clipper Erickson, Piano - Direct-To-Tape Recording Company - DTR2013 Jonathan Peters - Lament, Opus 21 - Matt Goulding, Violin, Jonathan Peters, Piano - CD produced by Jonathan Peters -No number given - Johann Mattheson - Excerpts from "Cleopatra" - Isabel Bayrakdarian , Soprano, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Jeanne Lamon, Conductor - CBC Records - SMCD 5233 Saint Gregory of Nareg - Havoon, Havoon - Isabel Bayrakdarian, Soprano, Elmer Eisler Singers and Chamber Orchestra, Raffi Armenian, Conductor - CBC Records - SMCD 5215 7:00 - 8:00 Garbis Aprikian - Dark Sky - Sipan-Komitas Choir, Orchestre Symphonique Bel'Arte, Garbis Aprikian, Conductor - Erol - ER 200019 Alan Hovhaness - Processional and Fugue, Op. 76, No. 5 - Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, Kerry Stratton, Conductor - Dorian Recordings - DOR-93166 - Michel-Richard Delalande - "Regina coeli" - Vocal and Instrumental Ensemble of Lausanne, Michel Corboz, Conductor - Erato - 60240-2 - Ross Edwards - "Veni Creator Spiritus" - Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Richard Mills, Conductor - ABC Classics - 476 227-0 - Paul Schoenfield - Four Motets - BBC Singers, Avner Itai, Conductor - Naxos - 8.559418 8:00 -8:30am Paul Creston - Symphony No. 4, Op. 52 - Albany Symphony Orchestra, David Allen Miller, Conductor - Albany Records -TROY 737 - Anon. 13th Century France - "Hey, Beautiful Lady" - Sinfonye - Glossa - GCD 920704 - |

Wednesday, April 20, 2005 - 5:15 to 8:30 AM EARTH DAY - WITH CLASSICAL DISCOVERIES Two compositions presented in todays program; “The Butterfly Tree” and “Memento Mori”, inspired me to do put together a group of works that were inspired by earth matters and to celebrate this years Earth Day. Having many young students I often think what kind of Earth they will inherit from our exploitive generation and I get depressed, but learning about action of one young woman – Julia Butterfly Hill that saved 1000 years old tree gives me a hope that maybe it is still hope for our planet, and for all its people, animals and plants. Only 17 years separates us from 2022 – time where the action of Sci-Fi movie Soylent Green took place. To this day the movie still evokes a strong emotion and is still considered only a futuristic fantasy, but is it a fantasy? Is its story really so far fetched? We do not have to go to the future because a miniature version of Soylent Green. already happened - over 400 years ago on Eastern Island. I only hope that we learn from Easter Island’s disaster a lesson, so no one will want in 100 years from now to compose a Memento Mori for the Earth. Destruction of one kind of plant or animal can bring a chain reaction that can cause dangerous consequences to all species. Just take for example current story with a final solution for “feral cats” – that are blamed for the destruction of song birds. I am a big fan of cats and this story especially touched me. I am sure that it is partially correct, but is that only the reason for disappearing birds? We are forgetting that our frogs are already gone because of polluted air and water. The birds habitat is destroyed by us - “homo sapiens” and air and water pollution is also major contributor to the death of birds. What will happen when all feral cats will be gone, and our land will be invaded by mice and rats eating food supply? We know that domestic cats do not know what to do with rats. In the Middle Ages, when cats were burned and hanged for being a consort to witches and devils, the declining population of cats led to rats population explosion that brought disease that spread all over Europe and killed over a half of the population. Are we ready to repeat this again?
